Continuous Improvement is a methodology used to identify opportunities to reduce waste, streamline processes as outcomes. Organizations deploy various types of models to make their operations efficient.

Based on what your organization requires, we can use tailor-made continuous improvement models to eliminate waste in terms of labor and raw materials, among others and make the manufacturing, production or other processes streamlined to make it cheaper, quicker and faster than before.

Let’s look at some of the models that we use on our existing clientele with sheer professionalism.

Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA)

PDCA involves four stages: Plan, Do, Check and Act. It is a systemic process to gather insights, knowledge and learning about services or products. Here, the planning stage involves finding a problem and creating a hypothesis. The Do stage revolves around administering a solution and then evaluating at stage 3, aka Check. The final step is Act, where results are compared with what was expected earlier. If the results are not up to the mark, organizations repeat the PDCA cycle to find a perfect solution.

Kaizen

Kaizen means ‘improvement’ when translated from Japanese. Unlike Six Sigma, a rigid and hierarchical approach, Kaizen involves everyone from a garbage collector to the CEO of any organization to set out on a journey for improvements in both flow and processes. Kaizen revolves around a mindset where employees must ascertain opportunities, make changes, measure results, adjust their approach and repeat.

In Kaizen, flow and process are the two integral elements where the first deals with information, products and services; the latter deals with implementing minor changes to enhance efficiency in an organization.

Kanban

Kanban takes a tactical approach on top of the Kaizen process. It can be used across different processes, be it manufacturing, production, or software development, among others. Kanban uses a continuous and ever-improving process to recognise opportunities, improve and increase efficiency. Kanban involves tracking four items: total work in process, blockers, throughput and load time. Everything is inscribed on a physical Kanban board or software.

Six Sigma

Six Sigma is perhaps the most widely recognized continuous improvement model that comes under Lean management. It focuses on eliminating defects in an organization and the goal is to achieve predictable process results. Six Sigma keeps the quality of the products as a priority, with a minor deflection of just 3.4 parts per million units as a good number for defects.

A well-lad data-driven approach, Six Sigma utilized several quality management methods that trained six sigma professionals to perform to eliminate defects and improve overall processes with every iteration.

Of course, these are the only continuous Improvement and support models used in organizations. There are Five Whys and 5S Framework, among others, that are administered based on the use case of the organizations.
